Module summary

This module aims to provide an introduction to the key concepts relating to people's behaviour within organisations. This will be approached from a psychological perspective, and will span individual behaviour, small group processes and wide-scale organizational systems. The module aims to explain the relevance of such approaches for practising managers.

Objectives

This course aims to provide an introduction to the integrated study of the key concepts and underlying theories relating to aspects of behaviour of people within organisations. This will be predominantly from a psychological perspective, drawing on other approaches where applicable.

The course also aims to explain the relevance of such theories for practising managers.


On completion of this module students should be able to:
- understand and be able to explain the concept of organisational behaviour;
- identify, explain and critique different theoretical accounts of this concept, together with different methodological approaches to its study;
- understand and evaluate the limitations of these theoretical and methodological approaches; and
- appreciate the practical implications and usefulness of such theoretical accounts to today's managers.

Syllabus

The module will begin by looking at topics that relate to the individual within the organisation, followed by small groups, and finally the organisation as a whole system.

- Motivation
- Group formation & structure
- Group performance and effectiveness
- Group control, conformity & deviance
- Leadership
- Organisational structure
- Stress in organisations.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be encouraged to complete non-assessed pieces of course work during the semester. These will include multiple choice tests administered through the VLE and other on-line exercises.
